Process: Research Binders
Michael Lewis’s, Apple Tree Gang, painted in 1992, depicts a community of unhoused people who lived in Victoria from the 1960s to the 1990s. Members of the Apple Tree Gang faced a difficult life full of struggle, but they were rich in the relationships they shared with each other. Amongst one another they felt accepted and supported. They lived between the Janion building and the Johnson Street Bridge. In this painting, Michael Lewis captured their camaraderie and friendship.
The caring and companionship that the ATG shared, inspired nearby business owners Michael and Valerie Williams
(no relation) to become involved personally with members of the ATG. Michael Williams recognized their devotion to each other and found he could relate to their sense of community.
In November of 1992, Michael Williams, Valerie Williams, and many other individuals funded the construction of a prefabricated shack for the members of the Apple Tree Gang in their favourite spot between the Janion building and the Johnson Street Bridge.
