ANGELA GROSSMAN

She begins her artistic process by using old photographs to create faces for her paintings and then creates the rest with her paintbrush. She calls her process “painting with photography”.

Angela Grossmann was born in London in 1955. Originally, Grossmann received her BA in journalism, but in the early 1980’s she began her artistic training at Emily Carr College in Vancouver. Although Grossman was listed in 2006 as one of the artists who most inspired British art students, she has remained obscure in the Canadian art scene.

The artist’s intention is to depict a scene whose location is unclear, yet perceptibly troubling.  Some students suggested it was a hospital room, and others claimed it was the back of car. What do you think? Grossmann’s objective is to make the viewer of her art into the voyeur. A voyeur is “an obsessive observer of sordid or sensational subjects.”

When looking at Grossmann’s work it helps to know something about the artist. Grossman’s work often focuses on marginalized groups with in society. She focuses on the themes of abandonment, history, and personal growth.
